How Hunnyball Can Make Summer Camp Better: A Game-Changer for Campers and Counselors

Going to summer camp is one of the most treasured experiences in childhood. It's a time for adventure, friendship, personal growth, and fun. But in a world that's increasingly digital, fast-paced, and full of distractions, camp organizers are constantly on the lookout for ways to make their programs more engaging and enjoyable for kids. Enter Hunnyball, a revolutionary game that is poised to make a significant impact on summer camps everywhere.

Whether you're a camp director, a counselor, or a parent looking to provide the best experience for your child, here’s how Hunnyball can elevate the summer camp experience and create lasting memories for campers.

What is Hunnyball?

Before diving into how Hunnyball can enhance summer camp, let's start with a quick overview of the game itself. Hunnyball is a high-energy, interactive, and team-based game that combines elements of wallball, handball, roundnet (aka - Spikeball), and a bit of strategy. It’s designed to be easy to learn but offers a fun yet challenging experience for players of all skill levels. The game involves two teams trying to score points by tossing a soft, inflatable ball onto the Hunnyball board with a goal of making it unreturnable by the opposition.

The uniqueness of Hunnyball lies in its creative rules, dynamic gameplay, and the fact that it can be adapted to virtually any outdoor or indoor space. Whether it’s played on a grassy field, on sand at the beach, on turf, or in a gymnasium, it offers endless possibilities for action-packed fun.

1. Fostering Teamwork and Cooperation

Summer camps are all about building camaraderie and fostering friendships, and Hunnyball is the perfect game for promoting teamwork. In the traditional game of Hunnyball, players need to work together to strategize, pass the ball, and outwit the opposing team. It’s a game that thrives on communication, coordination, and cooperation.

Kids learn that success isn't just about individual performance; it's about working in sync with others. Through Hunnyball, campers quickly realize that their ability to work together and play as a team directly impacts the outcome of the game. Like any great game, these lessons extend beyond the field, encouraging campers to form deeper connections with their peers and carry those teamwork skills into other aspects of their camp experience.

2. Promoting Physical Activity in a Fun Way

In an age where kids are often glued to screens, getting them excited about physical activity can be a challenge. Many traditional sports are either too competitive or require specific skills that might intimidate kids. However, Hunnyball is designed to be fun, accessible, and engaging for everyone, regardless of their athletic abilities. (It does rely on the ability of the players to catch and throw however).

The game itself involves catching, throwing, running, passing, a little defense and rewards quick reflexes, making it a full-body workout that improves coordination, agility, and endurance. Yet, its rules and structure ensure that no one feels left out or overwhelmed. Everyone gets a chance to participate, and no one is left standing on the sidelines (unless they are waiting in line for their turn).

Incorporating Hunnyball into the summer camp schedule ensures that campers stay active while having fun. With its dynamic gameplay, kids won’t even realize they’re getting exercise. The more they play, the stronger and healthier they become.

3. Incorporating Creativity and Strategy

One of the most exciting aspects of Hunnyball is that it’s not just about physical skill; it’s about creativity and strategy. The game allows kids to think outside the box and come up with innovative ways to outsmart their opponents. Whether it’s a tricky pass, a well-timed feint, or a clever defensive move, Hunnyball offers endless opportunities for creative problem-solving.

One of the most successful early strategies identified by the founders was the invention of the “Up - Down” shot. It involves finding a way to catch a pass near the edge of the board, and then jumping “up” with throwing “down” to deliver a shot that acts like a worm-burner, because it comes off the board almost parallel to the ground. It’s very difficult to catch or defend, and often leads to a point when executed successfully.

Campers can come up with their own strategies as a team, and during the course of the game, they can adapt those strategies as they learn what works best. This aspect of Hunnyball promotes critical thinking and decision-making skills, helping kids improve their cognitive abilities while still keeping things fun.

4. Promoting Inclusivity and Fun for All

One of the most remarkable things about Hunnyball is its inclusivity. The game is designed to be played by kids of all abilities, sizes, and backgrounds. There’s no emphasis on one individual being better than another; instead, the focus is on teamwork, fun, and ensuring that everyone has a chance to participate.

The Hunnyball team has already identified 4 ways to adapt Hunnyball to make it as inclusive as possible:

  1. Adjust the angle of the Hunnyball board: If you tilt it back, the ball comes off with a higher loft and is easier to catch - this is ideal for younger or less experience players..  Tilt it forward and the ball comes off more flat - better for most competitive players.

  2. Adjust the pressure in the ball: A ball with less air will move more slowly off the board and is easier to catch, particularly for campers with smaller hands. A full inflated ball really “pops” off the board at a high speed and is more challenging to catch.

  3. Add more players: For younger or less mobile campers, sometimes the boundaries can be too large a space to easily defend. One option is to make the boundaries smaller, but we actually suggest adding more players…3v3, or 4v4 or even unlimited players. This offers the benefit of getting more campers involved while keeping Hunnyball fun!

  4. Remove the boundaries or add more Hunnyball boards:  Some of our more creative counselors had already started to remove the boundaries (while also adding players) and also adding multiple boards (either back to back, or at opposing ends) to get even more campers involved and adding new layers of strategy and fun to the game.  Something like this could be perfect for Colors Wars or intercamp competitions.

For camp directors and counselors, the inclusivity of Hunnyball makes it a valuable tool in creating a more diverse, welcoming camp environment. We encourage you to adapt it however makes the most sense for you!

5. Creating Lasting Memories

At its core, summer camp is about creating memories that last a lifetime, and Hunnyball is a game that’s sure to leave a lasting impression on every camper. Whether it’s the thrill of scoring a goal, the laughter after a blooper of a pass, or the joy of winning a close match, Hunnyball fosters moments that kids will remember long after they return home.

The social bonds built through Hunnyball are also a key component of lasting memories. Campers will remember the friendships they forged while playing the game, the teamwork that brought them together, and the fun they had during every match.

Hunnyball can even become a tradition at summer camps, with tournaments, annual championships, or fun variations of the game to look forward to. These traditions help campers connect with each other across different years and create a sense of continuity in their camp experiences.

Conclusion

Incorporating Hunnyball into summer camp activities can significantly enhance the overall camp experience. It promotes teamwork, physical activity, friendly competition, creativity, and inclusivity, all while providing campers with the opportunity to make lifelong memories. With its easy-to-learn yet exciting gameplay, Hunnyball is an ideal addition to any summer camp looking to elevate the fun, foster personal growth, and bring kids together in new and exciting ways.
