This is What Makes a Beach and Backyard Game Great!

When it comes to designing the ultimate beach and backyard game, there are a few essential factors that make a game a hit for gatherings of all kinds. A perfect game is inclusive, easy to set up, quick to learn, and adaptable to various group sizes and skill levels. When we were designing Hunnyball, we had a lot of these in mind.  Here are some qualities that make a game great for the beach or backyard.  (And don’t forget to look for the Hunnyball “pro tips”)

1. Simplicity and Accessibility

A standout beach or backyard game is simple enough for everyone to grasp quickly. Easy-to-understand gameplay encourages inclusivity, ensuring no one feels left out due to complex rules or strategies. For example, games like cornhole or ladder toss involve basic objectives but still offer engaging, friendly competition for all ages.

  • Hunnyball pro tip: When you just watch a Hunnyball video, you may not catch on…but once you try it in person, you quickly learn the rules are similar to ones you’ve seen before. We’ve just put them together in a unique way. So don’t be intimidated - jump in and join the fun!

2. Portability and Ease of Setup

A great beach or backyard game should be easy to carry and set up, especially when you're on the move. This portability ensures the game can be enjoyed at a variety of outdoor locations. Games like Spikeball or paddleball, for instance, are compact and take mere minutes to set up. This feature makes it easy to start playing, even on spontaneous outings.

  • Hunnyball pro tip: We come complete with a carrying bag to make Hunnyball easier to move around - but, admittedly, we are a little more heavy than some other games. But keep this in mind - we needed to be just heavy enough to make sure the ball has some “pop” when it comes off the board after a solid throw.  Any lighter and the board can rattle or move, and that isn't the level of quality we wanted for you.

3. Physical Activity with the Right Level of Intensity

Outdoor games are a fun way to stay active, but they should offer the right balance between casual play and intensity. Just like beach volleyball can be a relaxing volley between friends, or a 2v2 slam fest to see who rules the court, it’s all about choosing a game that matches your needs.  The best games can support all levels of intensity and activity.

  • Hunnyball pro tip: Hunnyball combines athletic movement with eye-hand coordination and quick reflexes, making it perfect for families and groups who want to stay active.  As we like to say …it can be casual, competitive, or cutthroat - it’s up to you!

4. Adaptability to Different Spaces

A game’s adaptability to various locations and spaces is crucial. The best outdoor games can be played in a range of environments, from a sandy beach to a grassy backyard or even a parking lot. Games that rely on versatile rules and setups work well in both smaller, contained spaces and wide-open areas. Frisbee, for instance, can be played in both compact spaces with simple throwing or expansive spaces with more running.

  • Hunnyball pro tip: You guessed it…Hunnyball can be played on sand and grass, and even turf! .Read the pros and cons of eachWe can even be played on a parking lot, we just don’t recommend diving there…the road rash isn’t worth it.

5. Inclusivity and Team Dynamics

Games that encourage teamwork can enhance social bonds, making them perfect for gatherings of friends or family. Games like bocce ball and capture the flag are excellent for this, as they bring people together and encourage positive interactions among players.

6. Friendly Competition and Scoring

A little competition keeps things exciting, but it should remain lighthearted to ensure everyone enjoys the experience. Games that include a simple scoring system allow for friendly rivalry, and they’re easy to adapt based on group preferences. Points-based games like ring toss or paddle games, where players can rally and keep track of scores, add an element of competition that doesn’t overwhelm the spirit of play.

  • Hunnyball pro tip: Hunnyball was invented by a very competitive family; so we recommend making it as competitive as you can when you play.

7. Durability and Weather-Resilience

Outdoor games are best when they’re durable and weather-resistant, as they can withstand sand, water, or varying conditions. Games made of high-quality materials stand up better to wear and tear from repeated use, whether at the beach or in a backyard. High-quality paddles, water-resistant balls, and sturdy boards ensure the game can be enjoyed over multiple seasons without needing frequent replacements.

  • Hunnyball pro tip: Your Hunnyball set is coated with an oil-based varnish and uses marine grade Baltic Birch plywood, so it’s definitely resistant to moisture and can handle a little rain. Just don’t store it outside, or keep it submerged in water…it’s wood after all.
